ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia
Glossy leaves and almost no maintenance.
Care level: Easy
The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is the plant we recommend to everyone who says “I kill every plant.” It tolerates low light, drought, dry air, and benign neglect better than almost any other houseplant.
Light
Adapts to any light except full sun. Will grow (slowly) in a windowless room with overhead lighting alone.
Water
Water only when the soil is completely dry. Every 2–3 weeks in growing season, once a month or less in winter. The rhizomes store water — that's what makes the plant drought-tolerant.
Where it thrives
Offices, hotel lobbies, north-facing rooms, anywhere with fluorescent or low natural light. The architectural shape works in modern interiors.
Care schedule
- Water sparingly. That's the whole schedule.
Common issues
- Yellow leaves at the base: Overwatering. Stop watering for a month.
- Wrinkled stems: Severe underwatering. Soak the pot for 30 minutes.
Pro tips
- Wipe the glossy leaves with a damp cloth monthly to keep their shine.
- The ZZ is mildly toxic if ingested — keep away from pets and toddlers.
