Flowering
Hibiscus
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis
Large, tropical flowers that bloom almost year-round.
Care level: Medium
The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the tropical garden's headline act. With flowers 4–6 inches across in every colour from pure white to deep crimson, it blooms almost year-round in the Indian climate.
Light
Full sun, 6+ hours daily. More sun = more flowers.
Water
Water deeply 2–3 times a week in summer, once a week in winter. Mulch the base to retain moisture.
Where it thrives
As a specimen shrub in a lawn, as a hedge, or trained as a small tree. Excellent for attracting sunbirds and hummingbirds.
Care schedule
- Feed every 2 weeks during growing season with a balanced fertiliser.
- Prune lightly after each flush of flowers to maintain shape.
- Watch for aphids on new growth — a strong spray of water usually dislodges them.
Common issues
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering, nutrient deficiency, or scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves for sticky residue.
- Bud drop: Sudden temperature change, dry soil, or thrips. Maintain consistent watering and check for tiny insects on buds.
