Curry Leaf Plant
Murraya koenigii
A kitchen-garden essential for South Indian cooking.
Care level: Medium
The Curry Leaf Plant (Murraya koenigii) is the queen of the Indian kitchen garden. A small tree in the citrus family, its leaves are indispensable for South Indian cooking and have real medicinal value.
Light
Full sun, 6+ hours daily. Won't thrive in shade.
Water
Water deeply 2–3 times a week in summer, once a week in winter. Maintain consistently moist but well-drained soil.
Where it thrives
Kitchen gardens, balconies in full sun, and outdoor courtyards. Easy to grow in large containers (15″+ pots).
Care schedule
- Feed every 2 months with a balanced fertiliser.
- Prune the top to encourage bushy growth and more leaves.
- Repot every 2 years into a slightly larger container.
Common issues
- Pest attack (aphids, scale, mealybugs): Spray with neem oil weekly for 3 weeks.
- Yellow leaves: Nutrient deficiency (especially nitrogen or iron). Feed with a balanced fertiliser.
Pro tips
- Pick leaves from the bottom up — the plant will push more growth from the top.
- Freeze fresh leaves in small zip-lock bags for 3 months — they keep their flavour beautifully.
