Five low-maintenance plants for your first apartment
If you're new to plants, start with species that can handle a missed watering and a dim corner. The plants below are our top picks for first-time plant parents in Indian homes — all available at our nursery and all forgiving of the most common beginner mistakes.
1. Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata)
Architectural, almost impossible to kill. The Snake Plant tolerates low light, drought, and benign neglect better than almost any other houseplant. NASA included it on its list of top air-purifying plants. Care: water every 2–3 weeks, any light level.
2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
Glossy leaves and a tolerance for low light that rivals the Snake Plant. The ZZ stores water in its rhizomes, so it can go a month without a drink. Care: water when soil is completely dry, any light level.
3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
A trailing vine that grows in almost any condition. The Pothos is the plant we recommend for hanging baskets, top of bookshelves, and anywhere you want a cascade of green. Care: water weekly, bright indirect light.
4. Monstera Deliciosa
Sculptural leaves and forgiving of inconsistent care. The Monstera's split leaves are unmistakable, and it grows a new one every 4–6 weeks. Care: water weekly, bright indirect light, monthly feed in growing season.
5. Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)
A tropical feel with relatively easy care. The Areca Palm is the plant we recommend for filling a corner with vertical greenery. Care: water twice a week, bright indirect light, mist regularly.
What to buy first
If you only have space for one, get the Snake Plant. If you have space for two, add a Pothos. If you have a bright corner and a bit of confidence, go for the Monstera. All three are at our nursery, ready to go home with you today.
